Winter Staging Tips

There are some basic rules of home staging: declutter and depersonalize, clean until it gleams, and refresh your home’s walls with a neutral paint. Here in Canada, we have an additional opportunity to put guests in a buying frame of mind, by capturing the beauty of the changing seasons throughout our homes.

Winter brings the vibrancy of sparkling snow and crisp winter air intermingled with the yearning to snuggle in for the next few months — all of which can inspire special touches in your home décor. Here are some winter home staging tips to get you started.

  1. Fire up a warm and inviting ambiance with neatly stacked firewood in the hearth, or — if you don’t have a fireplace — pillar candles of different heights grouped together in your living areas.
  2. Create a homey atmosphere by draping plush throws on beds, couches and other furniture.
  3. Reverse dark winter evenings with bright lighting in all your lamps and light fixtures.
  4. Expecting potential home viewers? Increase the indoor temperature by a couple of degrees, to provide a welcome respite from the chilly outdoors.
  5. Add seasonal scents to your home — and moisture to dry winter air — by simmering cinnamon sticks and cloves in boiling water on the stovetop, or in a crockpot. Add orange or lemon peels, branches of rosemary, or cranberries to suit your scent preferences.
  6. Address the winter season by hanging a wreath on the front door, and decorating with natural, seasonal décor like birch branches, winterberries and evergreen twigs.
