Have a Happy and Safe Holiday!

Your home is brimming with holiday cheer, with flickering candles on every table, sparkling lights fueled by a highway of extension cords, and a red-hot oven continuously churning out volumes of sizzling culinary delights. Add a revolving door of guests, kids, and pets orbiting in perpetual motion; what could possibly go wrong?

Take a break to think about the following seasonal safety suggestions:

  • Sparkly lights are beautiful at any time of the year, but especially so now. When it comes to string lights, however, recognize that adding sparkle and warmth to your home shouldn’t come in the form of an electrical fire. To avoid overloading extension cords, first find out the wattage rating of the cord, as well as the power requirements of any lights or decorations you’re planning to plug into it. If the combined power requirements exceed the wattage rating, overheating and fire can occur. Also, always remember to turn decorative lights off before you go to bed or leave home for an extended time.
  • Candles and fireplaces can add warmth and ambiance to the frostiest rooms, but they must be supervised at all times. That means never leaving candles and fires burning unattended, and always using a fireplace screen to contain sparks.
  • Small children and pets simply can’t resist anything shiny, so hang breakable ornaments and tinsel far away from temptation. Be sure to also keep little hands, muzzles and beaks away from common yet toxic holiday plants like poinsettias.
  • Channel your inner clean freak with frequent hand washing, especially in the kitchen. Thoroughly wash every cutting board and work surface constantly too, to reduce the risk of cross contamination with all the different foods passing through the kitchen.
  • If you can’t stand the heat, get your guests out of the kitchen! Shoo your guests out of the kitchen when cooking, to avoid injuries from hot stoves and splattering grease.
