Fall Maintenance Reminders

Now’s the time to tackle some preventive home maintenance, before temperatures plunge into winter territory!

1. Branch out. Look for trees that have dead or unhealthy branches on them, and prune them back now to avoid any danger of those branches falling during a winter storm.

2. Don’t leave the leaves. While you may feel pressured to rake up every last leaf to match your neighbour’s perfect lawn, consider simply mowing over your leaves instead. Not only is this easier, it also creates organic material that will add good nutrients to your soil, helping your grass grow better next year! One way or the other, don’t leave big piles of un-mulched leaves on your lawn as they can stifle your grass and inhibit spring lawn growth.

3. Don’t leave the eaves
. Once all your leaves have fallen, it’s important to clean out your eavestroughs and downspouts to allow for a clear path for the upcoming rain and melted snow.

4. Seal appeal. Add weather stripping around window frames and doorframes to make them airtight when the cold breezes blow.

5. Watch your step. Now’s the time to fix any uneven outdoor surfaces, including stairs, railings and your driveway.

6. Slow the flow. Shut off exterior faucets; drain and store your garden hoses.

7. Vent outside. When was the last time you cleaned your dryer vent? Doing so not only makes your dryer work more efficiently, it also decreases the risk of a dryer fire.

8. Warm up to a checkup. Replace the furnace filter and schedule a furnace check before it’s time to fire it up for the long, cold winter!
