Green Your Garage Garbage

When rolling up your sleeves to tackle your spring cleaning, don’t forget about your garage, too!
After sorting your unwanted and unneeded garage contents into piles for repurposing or donating, you’ll be left with the garbage pile; be sure to dispose of those items properly. For example:

  • Used tires. Instead of cluttering landfills with used tires, investigate organizations that will accept your old tires for free and turn them into useful things such as rubber surfaces for children’s playgrounds.
  • Old paint. Ask your local home renovation and hardware stores if they accept old cans of paint. Some stores will forward the paint onto a processor for safe disposal or, in some cases, the old paints can even be mixed and recreated into new paint, or recycled as a raw material in the manufacturing of concrete and cement.
  • Used motor oil. DIYers who perform their own vehicle oil changes may wonder how best to dispose of the used oil. Recognize that just one gallon of improperly disposed oil (such as oil poured down a storm drain) can contaminate a million gallons of groundwater! Instead, check out which of your local car dealerships and garages are set up on recycle programs and will accept old oil and even used filters.

From paint to pesticides to power tool blades, there are a myriad of items in your garage that should never be dispatched to the garbage. Search for local recycling and municipal household hazardous waste disposal locations online, and then enjoy your clutter-free garage!
